Happy Birthday, Ira Travell!

Ira W. Travell was born in Troy, NY on January 17, 1868, to Ira Rose Travell and Elvira Amelia Pierce Travell. The second of four boys, he graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, MA, and married Margaret Belle Ansley in Geneva, NY, on August 22, 1894. He had two children, Winthrop Atwater Travell and Margaret Travell Bennett. Mr. Travell died on June 2, 1946, in the Hackensack Hospital.

Mr. Travell did post graduate work at Cornell, Amherst, Harvard, New York University and Columbia. He was the vice principal of the high school in Malone, New York. He then became the principal of the high school at Plainfield, New Jersey and later at Morristown. In 1912 he became the superintendent in Ridgewood and served in that position until 1930. He was a member of Westside Presbyterian Church and lived on Highwood Avenue. He was said to be a man “of broad education, the superior executive ability and high character.”

In honor of Mr. Travell's birthday, tomorrow will be a Travell spirit day! Wear your Travell best!

--In order for students to receive credit for a full day of school, they must attend for a full four hours.

--These letters do cite Ridgewood Board of Education policy. Do not panic at the policy's mention of retention. We share this information to underscore the importance of attendance, but that does not mean that your child will be retained at current grade level, because...

--We understand that there is always additional context for every family's situation. If you have additional documentation supporting a medical absence, please forward it to Mrs. DeLucca.

iHola!

The elementary Spanish program has finally arrived! We started with an exploration of The Day of the Dead, a holiday celebrated in Mexico. The students learned about the traditions, events, and food involved in this vibrant and colorful celebration. We watched videos, read a book about the holiday, and learned some Spanish vocabulary terms. The students in Kindergarten, first, and second grade also colored "calaveras" (skulls) while the students in third, fourth, and fifth grade colored "alebrijes" (mystical animal spirit guides)

It was a very fun way to get started!

Due to some scheduling changes, this year's One School One Book program is now going to begin on Monday, January 22nd, and will end on Friday, February 16th. Our culminating activity will be an assembly brought to us by 'Eyes of the Wild' and sponsored by the Travell HSA. More info to follow!

A message from Principal Ross:

Dear Travell Families,

Happy Early Thanksgiving! Please note these two items:

Tomorrow will be a Pajama Day at Travell! Encourage your child to wear pajamas or favorite comfy clothing. Please also note that school will dismiss at 12:45 pm. No lunches will be served.

The book fair will run December 5-December 9. This year, the Tiger’s Den will house the fair to accommodate additional shopping time before and after school for families. (More information forthcoming.) For that week only, students will eat lunch in their classrooms. Recess will be outside, weather permitting.
